HSBC Asian Five Nations 2009 Series Schedule
The Philippine Rugby Football Union has managed to secure the Sydney Football Stadiums (SFS) to take a squad of 30 players to participate in a one week Elite Training Camp in Sydney, Australia this coming April 1 - 8.
Over the last decade, the PRFU can be thankful for a number of great supporters and sponsors who have generously given up their time, resources and finances to ensure that the development of Rugby Union has continued to grow here in the Philippines.
Throughout 2009, the PRFU were able to run monthly touch football juniors programs and this certainly would not have been possible without the help and support of one man and his company.
For the second consecutive year, the Philippine Barbarians (PRFU North America) braved the cold weather of the prestigious New York Sevens and not only walked away with the Premiere Division Bowl Championship, but gave one of the top Sevens sides in the United States a run for its money.
The Philippines U/20 National Rugby Union Team made it a clean sweep by defeating Pakistan at Nomads Sports Complex on Saturday. The young Filipino team proved once again that Rugby Union is a sport that Filipinos can win and convincingly won the final game of the week long tournament by 46-3. Such was the dominance of their Philippines team over their opponents, in all three games, the Philippines scored a total of 128 points and only had 6 points scored against them. These 6 points came in the form of penalty conversions meaning that Laos, Iran and Pakistan were unable to score a try against the rock solid Pinoy defense.
The Philippine National U/20’s team remained undefeated after beating the Iranian National U/20s team. Iran had defeated Pakistan in their first round match and obviously had a height and weight advantage over the smaller, more skilled Philippine Team.
The Philippine National U/20’s Rugby Union Team opened the ARFU Division 2 Asian Championships with a convincing 61-0 win over the LAOS National U/20s team. Philippines team Captain Ben Saunders led the Philippine team by example and scored an individual try beating 4 opponents to open the scoring for the Philippines, Ben was well supported by newcomer from Sydney, Ned Stephenson who ran strong and hard at outside center and he consistently alluded the Laos defense to score twice and secure a halftime lead of 21-0 to the Philippines.

With the Asian International Rugby Union Season upon us current and prospective Filipino-Heritage Rugby Union Internationals are hard at work with the Parramatta Two Blues Rugby Union Club preparing for the Asian 5 Nations (A5N) Division 3 tournament being held at the University of Makati in the Philippines between the 1st and 4th of July.

Why RUGBY?Rugby satisfies my instincts to run hard and fast, play as a very close team and as an individual, use brains as well as brawn. Break the opposition and then have fun and get drunk with them afterwards...and there´s that winning feeling...
Since Harry was able to do anything, he has always been into Sport... His parents, being former athletes themselves encouraged him and his siblings in all aspects. So after moving to UK at the age of 6, Harry and his brother started playing rugby for a local Under 8´s team, as well as representing his City, School and County in swimming, Athletics and Gymnastics. During his early teens he needed to cut down on the amount of sports due to time and overtraining, so he focused on Rugby, and continued doing athletics in the off-season. From Ammanford RFC U14´s, Harry moved to a more successful Youth team, which won the Youth League in North and South Wales, and in the schools league, reached the finals in 2 successive years. He also represented and played with Welsh Crawshays and attended Wales development team camp befoe having to leave for University. During University he played for his Uni first team, and English Eastern counties, and earned full colours and was nominated for player of the year, 2 out of 3 years of his time in University. Now playing in Wales Division 1 League, but looking to enter Premiership next season. According to Harry, “the great thing about playing rugby is the bond between the whole team, on and off the field, and playing for Philippines Rugby has been the strongest bond within a team that I´ve played for before”. My aim is to get Philippines into the top 5 teams of Asia, and move further on and up Worldwide, in 15´s and 7´s rugby.
Name: Austin Emil Dacanay
Nickname: N/A
Age: 32
Date of Birth: Sept. 6, 1976
Current City: Tampa, FL
Heritage: 100% Pinoy, or Fullblood...tap, tap, pause, tapos, heart.
Team: Philppine National Team via Tampa Krewe RFC
Positioned Played: Loosehead Prop
Rugby Hero: Tana Umaga....and Jake Letts. xoxoxo
Interesting Skill: I once drank a lava lamp. The whole thing
Why RUGBY? Cause I was not tall enough to play basketball, like most pinoys, not fast enough to run track, like the itims, and not co-ordinated enough to play baseball or cricket like the putes, so rugby was all that was left. And oh yeah, and you can punch someone in the face and not go to jail.
According to Austin.. “Rugby was like a very bad cruise...when you first get on the boat, the food is laid out perfectly, the pool looks great, and the pinoy hosts are one in a million. But once the ship gets out to sea, and starts rocking back and forth and hits the 100 foot swells, all you wanna do is barf. Rugby is a great sport, and has been good to me in my career at the national, international and professional levels” but when he thinks about all of the games he´s played, all the injuries he has accrued, all the partying he has done, all of the characters he has met, and all the money he has spent, it makes him wanna barf...but when Austin thinks about being one of the Sons of Lapu Lapu, it makes him proud.
