Laos v Philippine line out
The Philippine National U/20’s Rugby Union Team opened the ARFU Division 2 Asian Championships with a convincing 61-0 win over the LAOS National U/20s team. Philippines team Captain Ben Saunders led the Philippine team by example and scored an individual try beating 4 opponents to open the scoring for the Philippines, Ben was well supported by newcomer from Sydney, Ned Stephenson who ran strong and hard at outside center and he consistently alluded the Laos defense to score twice and secure a halftime lead of 21-0 to the Philippines.

To their credit, the Laos team did not take a backward step and kept defending their line until finally the Philippine forwards took control of the game and started to make inroads into the Laos defense. The second half was one way traffic with the Philippine scoring 40 unanswered points. It was great to see both Junior Aloda and Julien Avondo both score tries in their International debut. Other players who stepped up to the International challenge included Andrew Farrar, Alex Buchel, Nathan Persons and Orlando Olvera.

The Philippine National Team will now meet the Iranian National Team this Thursday at the International School of Manila and this should prove to be a David and Goliath encounter, with the Philippine team showing skill, pace and flair against the Iranian team who beat Pakistan with brute force and size.
