Philippine National Under20 Rugby Union Team Coach at the Bahay Bata Centre

For the last two year’s the Bahay Bata Orphans have been playing Juniors Touch Rugby and are the current juniors champions in both the under 12’s and 14’s divisions. The whole of the Bahay Bata community were delighted to invite the Philippine National Under20’s Rugby Union Team to conduct a training and development session at their centre in Angeles City.

The National Team were in a three day training camp at the Clark Airbase and this included an afternoon training clinic at the Bahay Bata Centre. Philippines coach Matt Cullen used this coaching session to show the National Team players how the PRFU are supporting some of the under privileged youth in Pamapanga and it also allowed the boys from Bahay Bata to see first hand, that they to have opportunities to represent their country at a sport they are learning.

The Bahay Bata Centre currently has up to 40 players and the Philippines National players shared their skills, friendship and sportsmanship with their younger counterparts. The boys and administrators were excited to watch, talk, and play against the National Team players and the Bahay Bata President Mr. Victor Torres praised the efforts of both the younger and older Filipino players.

Six of the Philippine National Under20 team travelled from Australia to represent the Philippines and it was inspirational to see the Bahay Bata boys training with the National team and at the same time, the National players displaying enthusiasm, friendship and understanding for the hardships faced by certain sections of society here in the Philippines.

A true sense of respect and admiration came out of this visit, not only from the young Bahay Bata players, but equally from the proud group of Under20 National team players who felt privileged to show their skills, talents and friendship to the Filipino stars of the future. The whole group had a great afternoon and life long lessons were learnt by both the younger and older Filipino Rugby Union Players.
