To welcome 2009, the PRFU Board and its member-clubs have decided to expand and step-up their efforts in taking the Sport of Rugby Union to the underprivileged youth in orphanages and charitable foundations.
PRFU and Orchid Hotel Take Up a New Challenge to support the “Duyan Ni Maria” Children’s Home
The Philippine Rugby Football Union in conjunction with the Orchid Hotel and Kevin Wakeley have combined forces to start providing better living conditions for the orphaned children at the Duyan ni Maria Children’s Home in Angeles City.

Recently the teams from the Fat Boy 10’s Rugby Union tournament booked accommodations at the Orchid Hotel and the PRFU requested if all the rugby players could donate their 10% discount to a worthy cause. The response from the Pot Bellied Pigs and Causeway Bay Rugby Club members was an overwhelming “YES”
Kevin Wakeley, Dick Kendall and Dave Crowe from the Orchid Hotel then introduced both the Fat Boy 10’s players and the PRFU to this struggling foundation and it was instantly agreed that the commission money would be best spent at the Duyan Ni Maria Foundation.

The PRFU and Orchid Hotel have now agreed to hold monthly fundraising activities to assist the orphanage and today Matt Cullen (PRFU) and Kevin Wakely, Dick Kendall and David Crowe presented Sister Alexis with Php27, 000 from the Fat Boy Tens Hotel Commissions.
Sister Alexis was beyond herself and explained that the “Lord works in mysterious ways” as the orphanage had 2 unpaid overdue bills, Electricity and water. It is pretty hard to care for 60 children ages ranging from 2-14 without these essential utilities.

The four visiting gentlemen then made a pact to raise funds on a monthly basis to help this struggling nun and the Duyan Ni Maria Children’s Home.
The PRFU would also like to acknowledge all the efforts of Lionel Claydon who originally introduced Rugby and Touch Football to the Boy’s from the Bahay Bata Orphanage and attended all their tournaments and competitions in 2007/08. Unfortunately Lionel passed away last week and will be missed by all the whole Bahay Bata family and PRFU members.

With the Asian International Rugby Union Season upon us current and prospective Filipino-Heritage Rugby Union Internationals are hard at work with the Parramatta Two Blues Rugby Union Club preparing for the Asian 5 Nations (A5N) Division 3 tournament being held at the University of Makati in the Philippines between the 1st and 4th of July.
