As a result of some earlier introduction to Rugby Union by MAAP, the Police Academy has initiated a Rugby Union Training Program for both Male and Female teams. Beginning with a touch rugby program, the Academy hopes to develop a full contact rugby program in the new year (2005) with the aim of joining the PRFU senior competition.

ImageWith a little gentle persuasion we were able to facilitate the first “official” team training run at the Academy. The day coincided with the reunion of the Academy’s representatives at an International Law Enforcement conference and was presided over by PS Supt Jose Antonio Cera Salvacion.

We would also like to thank PCI Jason I. Capoy, F Supt James B. Candido and PI Samuel S. Delorino who will be instrumental in coordinating Rugby Union activities within the Academy.

The day was organized into several sessions starting with an impressive drill display by the cadets of the Academy.

ImageThe rugby program started with some basic skill coaching which the participants took to very quickly. Their natural abilities were most impressive and after initial skill work a game of touch rugby was organized and both men and women players took to the field with much enthusiasm.

ImageThe Academy aims to include a course in Rugby Union into their Curriculum in the near future.

The PRFU will continue to provide support in the form of coaching, basic equipment and direction to get them up and running.

All in all it was a fun and rewarding experience and has heightened the profile of Rugby Union within the Academy. There is promise of a strong team emerging to participate in the PRFU Championship in the future.
