Official match report by IRB representatives Jamie Scott & Jarrad Gallagher

Pakistan wrapped up their 2006 Asian Nations, Group 5, Triangular Series with a well earned 24 - 3 victory over the Philippines in Manila on Saturday at the Weekend.

This was a tough and committed match played between two of the IRB Associate Members developing Unions that was a great spectacle to watch.

First Half

The Philippines team  had the upper hand in the first half, bottling up their opposition in their own 22 for the opening quarter. Pakistan was able to soak up the pressure. The Philippines rued their lack of a goal-kicker, being successful with only one of  three kickable penalty attempts which would have given them the edge.

With half time looming, superb support play saw Pakistan put together a good back line attack.  Pakistani wing,  Arslan Zahid, crossed the line  in the 26th minute with the conversion coming from Kashif Khawaja.  A tight first half ended with the score at 7 - 3 in favour of Pakistan.

Second Half

Pakistan was an improved team from their 18 - 14 midweek victory against Guam.

They were gaining good possession from their scrums and line-outs and  began to dominate in these areas in the second half. Pakistan also improved on defence.  They were organised, and had a good pattern that gave them territorial advantage. This placed the Philippines under pressure and they struggled to maintain the level of sustained attack and possession that they set in the first half.

Pakistan were able to score two converted tries in the second half that were linked to pressure de fence and excellent play. Impressive games from the flyhalf, Junaid Malik, and inside centre, Ikram Butt.  They linked well after making impressive breaks with their support players.

Arslan Zahid scored again in midway through the second half,  and the Philippines were playing catch up rugby, which led inevitably to handling errors.  Flank Mansoor Rehan scored a final try for the visitors just before the final whistle.
