About the Eagles

ImageBased in Ayala Alabang Village, the Alabang Eagles and is a mixture of expatriate and Filipino players.

The Australian coach, Matthew Cullen, explains that rugby is becoming a popular sport in the Philippines and the club is made up of players from all ages and countries. “We have 15 year olds to 50 year olds and everyone enjoys the fitness, fun and friendship that comes from playing rugby.”

The Alabang Eagles have swooped onto the Philippine Rugby scene and despite just being formed in 2003; have  acquired the services of a full time Development Officer who will work in schools around the Alabang area, teaching students the basic skills of touch and Walla rugby. A Junior Division is also being started with children aged 5 – 15 years participating and learning about touch and contact rugby.  We promote and develop Rugby among the students at Tuloy foundation.

So far the club has 60 registered players, ranging through all ability levels. Beginners are welcome and the experienced players at the club are more than happy to help explain and teach the game to anyone who is willing to learn.

Please feel free to contact our family orientated club, “The Alabang Eagles” and start playing Rugby Union here in the Philippines.

History

In 2003 two Brent International School students David Carman and Josh Bullock, realized the need to start a Rugby club in the Alabang area. These boys were the founding members of the Alabang Eagles Rugby Club. At the age of 13 David and Josh started playing Rugby at Brent International School and over a 3-year period were part of an Asian Championship Schoolboys Rugby Team.  Their passion for rugby drove them to formulate a club team, where they could invite their friends and help to develop rugby in the Filipino community by providing free coaching and local rugby clinics.

These boys inspired all around them and their enthusiasm was evident to all those who became involved with the club.  The nucleus of the inaugural Alabang Eagles team was made up the championship Brent 2006 Schoolboys squad and 8 handpicked HMR Filipino employees.  Add to this, the experience of a few older Brent teachers, Alan Turnbull, Tom Egerton, Matt Cullen, Ian Sutherland and the Alabang Eagles were formed.

It wasn’t long before the Eagles were on even basis with their cross-town rivals Nomads and this proved to be the infant stages of developing a nationwide club competition.  Other clubs witnessed the potential and drive off the Alabang Eagles and in a 2 year period the Philippines had 6 Rugby clubs.

The Alabang Eagles have always prided themselves as playing fair hard rugby and are fully committed to developing local Filipino talent.

Five Filipino players from the Eagles have now represented their country in either the 7’s or 15’s.  These players include Arlo Carlito, Charles Jarvis, Mark k, Marlon Mendrez and Alvin San Diego.

Sponsors

No rugby club would be this successful without a strong support system and the Alabang Eagles have 3 major sponsors who have all been dedicated to the clubs philosophy  “To develop rugby union in the Philippines.”  These sponsors are all Eagles board members and like young David and Josh have a love of rugby.  The Eagles would not be a club they are today, if these three gentlemen and their companies had not become involved.

  • Randell Carman  (President) HMR Group
  • Steve Jarvis (Board Member) Give-A-Life
  • Bryan Smith (Board Member) P&O.

Leadership Team

Every Rugby club needs strong leadership and the two on field captains Tom Egerton and Matt Cullen have always represented the Alabang Eagles with pride and passion.

In the last 2 years the club has grown to include new foreign players and the Martin family from Wellington New Zealand have had 4 players represent the club. Mitch Martin, played with his 3 sons Zach, Sam and Jesse in one game, quite a remarkable feat.
