History of PRFU PDF Print E-mail
The PRFU was founded in 1999 and, but until about 2004, the PRFU activities were fairly limited as there was only one club – Nomads - playing rugby. There were no regular fixtures and the Club just played internal games, visiting ship and occasional touring sides. And there was only one major tournament each year – the Manila 10’s at Nomads, though this in itself has been an excellent vehicle for raising the visibility of Philippine’ rugby to clubs all around the World.

In the Philippines, until a few years ago, the sport was mainly played by expatriates, with only a few Filipino players. I am happy to say that this has now changed due to the efforts of the PRFU and several very committed individuals! Over half the players are now Filipino and we have a National Philippines Rugby Team that has already had success against other Asian and International teams playing overseas and in this country.

The PRFU is registered with SEC, has a Board of Directors. There is a full time Secretariat and a number of Development Officers/Coaches. These positions are sanctioned and supported by the PRFU and the Development Officers are providing free training in touch and contact rugby for schools, institutions, clubs and the military (PAF, PMA and PNP).

The PRFU is a member of the International Rugby Board and Asian Rugby Football Union, an Asian Sports Federation of the Olympic Council of Asia. It is recognized by the Philippine International Olympic Committee and Philippine National Sports Council.
