The Philippines had no trouble scoring in yesterday's HSBC Asian 5 Nations Regional Rugby Tournament game against Brunei.

Using a combination of speed and power, the Philippines squad came away with a dominating 101-0 victory at Wettengel Rugby Field.

The Philippines wasted no time getting on the board. Four minutes into the game, Ronald Pena sped through the Brunei defense for the first try of the game. A missed conversion by Pena after the try kept the score 5-0.

Brunei tried to create offense, but were denied each time by the stronger Philippine line.

In the 13th minute, Harry Morris scored on a breakaway for the Philippines. Not to be outdone, Pena scored on a breakaway of his own in the 18th minute. Pena converted on both attempts to add four more points and give his team a 19-0 lead midway through the first half.

Brunei had several chances to put points on the board, getting as close as 10 yards from the try line. Turnovers cost them any chance of scoring though.

The Philippines continued to capitalize on Brunei turnovers and a well-executed game plan to score five more tries with good conversions, giving them a commanding 54-0 lead at the break.

The second half was similar to the first, with the Philippines continuing to pour out the points.

Three minutes into the second half, Maxwell Stewart broke loose to score the try and his teammate, Oliver Saunders, made the conversion.

In the 52nd minute of the game, Andrew Barbacetto emerged out of a scrum and broke down the field to put his team up 66-0.

Two minutes later the Philippines increased their lead to 73-0 when Barbacetto took the ball from midfield all the way across the goal for another try.

In their attempt to get on the board, Brunei resorted to kicks from about forty and thirty yards out. However, they missed the upright by inches each time, keeping them scoreless.

The powerful Philippine offense continued to play hard and scored four more tries with successful conversions, giving them the whopping 101-0 victory.

Saturday finale

Rugby action continues at 4 p.m. Saturday when the Philippines takes on Guam at Wettengel Field in a highly anticipated matchup. The winner of the match will be the tournament champion. The last time these two teams met, Philippines came out victorious.
