Alabang Eagles Rugby Club win the Alabang 10’s Rugby tournament in a dramatic fashion against old rivals Nomads Rugby Club 10-7.

The Eagles blazed through their pool games and semi-finals with a breeze until facing off with Nomads in the finals. Nomads, looking to turn the tables and again become the number one team in the Philippines since their loss to the Eagles at the Sinulog 10’s, came in with all guns firing. As usual, a hard knocking game up front was to be expected, even with the sudden down pour of rain which gave the game more intensity.

The Eagles used their running style tactics to perfection and taking advantage of a loose ball ran in an easy try in the corner but missed the conversion early in the 1st half.

In the 2nd half, Nomads used their power in the scrums and their dominating forwards to take out the Eagles’ running style rugby. This led to a number of infringements and penalties against the Eagles and kept the Nomads deep in Eagles territory for most of the half. Finally, the Eagles defense broke through a set piece and Nomads scored under the post with a conversion in the last two minutes of the game.

It looked like Nomads would take home the Alabang trophy again this year as they kept the Eagles in their half after the re-kick but a vital penalty was given to the Eagles in the dying seconds of the game, deep within their territory. Eagles’ fly-half, Matt Cullen, took advantage of this and took a quick tap and side stepping the 1st few defenders  ran down the sideline. Uncharacteristically passing the ball to supporting prop, Mike Duhig, he finished it off with a sprint from the 50 meter line and dived over to give the Eagles the winning try.

In other finals of the day, British School and Tuloy won their respective Under 10 and Under 14 divisions and the ISM Varsity Girls won the ladies touch tournament. Nomads Carabaos won the Men’s Plate final and MAAP warriors won the Bowl final. The awards ceremony was held at Sids Bar, Alabang.
