The first round of national trials for the Philippines Mens Rugby Union Team (15s) will take place at the Nomad Sports Club in Merville Village this Saturday 22nd April.

The trials will be held on the following two Saturdays, 22nd and 29th of April. There is also an option of holding extra trials on the Sundays of both weekends (venue for sunday game to be confirmed if required).

Time:      3.00pm - 6.00pm
Venue:    Nomad Sports Club, Merville Village
Dates:     Saturday 22nd and 29th April

Players are encouraged to attend both Saturday trials.  Some players have already indicated they cannot attend both Saturdays and this is why trials will be run over two weekends.

The Philippine National Team will be announced on 29th April, after the final trial session.  The National Team Training will then commence that week.

Even those ineligible for selction on the National Team are invited to come down and get involved in the trial games that will be held.

With the increased growth of the PRFU and the increased importance of the internet (in the marketing and promotion of an organization) the PRFU has taken the significant step to bring its online presence uptodate with the latest web technologies. This new site is intended to act as the central online repository for all information and news regarding Rugby in the Philippines.

Although much of the hard work of upgrading the site has been completed, this is very much a work in progress and what you see, represents only the end of Phase 1 of the site upgrade. The SEA Games Rugby Sevens Tournament had a fairy tale ending for its Hosts as the first-ever, All-Filipino 7’s Rugby Team won the Gold Medal. The tournament , held on 3-4 December 2005, was a 2-Day Event open to all National, Representative and Club teams around Asia.

The Philippine Rugby Football Union (PRFU) was given recognition by the Philippine Olympic Committee to put on a 7's Rugby Tournament as a Site Sport (i.e. demonstration sport) as part of the South East Asian Games. This was the first time rugby had been included in the SEA Games. Rugby is part of the Commonwealth games and the Asian Games (next held in Doha in 2006). The event was organized by the PRFU and hosted at Nomads Sports Club, Manila which is well know for its International Manila 10’s Tournament every March – previously described on ESPN Star Sports Rugby Show  as “the best social rugby 10’s tournament in the World”.

The future of rugby development shone brightly on Saturday at Cuenca Field. Hosted by the Alabang Eagles, we had a fantastic afternoon watching and playing rugby at all levels. There were well over 100 kids, ranging from about 7 -14 years old. They were playing in 8 teams from Brent School, British School/Nomads, Tuloy Foundation/Don Bosco, European International School, Morong Eagles, Clark Rotary Juniors A & B and Nomads A. All the teams played round robin games in 2 pools of 4 and then Semi-Finals and Finals. Tuloy Foundation – with Father Rocky looking on – playing in their first tournament, did a brilliant job. They managed to get to the Finals where they unfortunately were beaten by a more experienced Nomads Juniors A team. But this was an all-Filipino final, so that is a great portent for the future! And I am sure they are looking forward to a re-match next week

Round 2 PRFU 7's League games held over last weekend (Saturday, 8 October) at Clark Airbase in near perfect weather conditions. Not too hot, overcast and dry with a field that was soft underfoot from the previous night's rain but wasn't muddy.

Right now Nomads is at the top of Division A with 20 points having won all their games and got bonus points for scoring more than 4 tries in each game. In round 2 last weekend they beat their sister team the Nomads Carabaos and MAAP1. Eagles are second on the points table with 5 points and Carabaos have 4. MAAP 1 - fighting the big boys with a bunch of new players - is at the bottom of Division A. However, these results are a bit skewed as some teams have played 4 games & others only 2. A new column has been added to the points table to indicate this.

It was a great day of 7-A-side rugby for the opening round of the PRFU 7’s League last Saturday 01 October. And even more exiting was the fact that we had Men’s, Women’s and Junior’s games. Held at the Ayala Alabang Country Club and hosted by Alabang Eagles the weather was just about perfect – not too hot and a little overcast. However, the very, very, very heavy downpour on Friday night resulted in the pitch being very, very wet and it soon chopped up into a sticky mud bath. This meant that the going was heavy and the ball alternately as slippy as a bar of soap or just dropping dead without a bounce or roll in a patch of soft mud. These conditions are a great leveler and the young fit fast backs get slowed down to the pace of the older, heavier (and maybe less fit) forwards.

Angeles City braced itself last weekend as the normally quiet, quaint little Filipino market town was overrun by hordes of squealing Pot Bellied Piggies and a total of 12 local and international rugby teams, there to attend the 2nd Inaugural Fatboys 10s.

It was a true fiesta of top-level rugby and family entertainment, and literally everyone was a winner.

The Manila Nomads won the Cup, the Pot Bellied Heavies won the Plate, the Makati Chiefs won the Bowl, a large amount of money was raised for the orphans, and Colonel Creus of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) got a new set of shirts courtesy of HKFC.

There were actually 6 local and 6 visiting teams in the competition. Two teams from Manila Nomads, two from Alabang Eagles, Makati Chiefs and the PAF were playing their first ever tournament!! The international visiting teams comprised two Pot Bellied Pigs teams (Heavies and Lites), Bangkok Bangers, HKFC LuVandals, Beijing Devils and Seoul Barbarians.

The Philippines Rugby Football Union (PRFU) has been strongly promoting Rugby Union Football in this country and now its efforts are bearing fruit. The finals of the first ever PRFU 15-A-Side Rugby League sponsored by SMART took place on Saturday 06 November 2004 at Nomads Sports Club, Madrid St, Merville Park Subdivision, Paranaque.

It was a major rugby extravaganza starting with Junior Rugby at 1:00pm and over 50 kids from the ages of 5 – 14 turned up from Brent School, British School, Nomads and the European International School (formerly Eurocampus). We had 6 teams of kids for 7-a-side and lots of subs. Each team played 2 games and the joint winners of 2 games each were the Eurocampus and the combined side Nomads/British School A. They will have a playoff on December 11.

As a result of some earlier introduction to Rugby Union by MAAP, the Police Academy has initiated a Rugby Union Training Program for both Male and Female teams. Beginning with a touch rugby program, the Academy hopes to develop a full contact rugby program in the new year (2005) with the aim of joining the PRFU senior competition.

With a little gentle persuasion we were able to facilitate the first “official” team training run at the Academy. The day coincided with the reunion of the Academy’s representatives at an International Law Enforcement conference and was presided over by PS Supt Jose Antonio Cera Salvacion.

We would also like to thank PCI Jason I. Capoy, F Supt James B. Candido and PI Samuel S. Delorino who will be instrumental in coordinating Rugby Union activities within the Academy.

The day was organized into several sessions starting with an impressive drill display by the cadets of the Academy.
