The women’s touch football division of the Manila World Cup (MWC) held two finals last Oct. 20 at the Nomad Sports Club in Paranaque.

One was the deciding game between France and Australia in the Main Final.  Both teams were undefeated in the pool games, by virtue of a four wins one and one draw standing. The draw came from the game where they competed against each other.

Scores in the finals game were locked 1-1 in regular time but Australia won in extra time with a 2-1 score.  Narelle Hill of Australia gave the team the winning score with her trademark dummy pass which allowed her to break the very close game between the two leading teams.

The team call of “Sons of Lapu Lapu” kick-started the Inaugural Philippine Rugby Football Union (PRFU) National Trials in Australia on Saturday the 29th of September.

Filipino-Heritage Rugby Union and Rugby League players coming from as far away as Bataan and Cebu City in the Philippines, Bundaberg and Brisbane in Queensland Australia, joined a host of players from Sydney Australia, to showcase their rugby talent.  This was the first step for some to being part of the Philippine National Team, for the South East Asian Games (SEAG) Rugby 7s in Thailand; Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU) U20 World Cup qualifying tournament in Brunei; and 2008’s International Test matches.

With the inspiration of a Manny Pacquio presentation from SEAG Head Coach Rick Hartley and to the music of ‘Pinoy Ako’ ringing in their ears, the Inaugural PRFU Filipino-Australian Trial team stepped out from the Parramatta Two Blues Rugby Union Club dressing room, for Rugby 7s trial matches against the Parramatta Two Blues 1st Grade Professional Rugby 7s team.  The young squad of Filipino-heritage players were going out to do battle against a Parramatta Two Blues team fielding two Fijian National 7s players and an Australian School Boy Representative - a team that made the Finals of the prestigious Kiama Rugby 7s tournament from 2004 to 2006.

Fattastic Heros do battle this Saturday PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 31 August 2007

Twelve (12) teams will vie for imortaldom, when they face each other on the hallowed grounds of Challenger Field in Clark Air Force Base, for the 4th Inaugural FatBoy10s this Saturday 01st September.

And if the last three (3) years are an indication, those lucky enough to be able to catch a glimpse of the furious action will be treated to dazzingly heroic feats worthy of this years super hero theme.

The seven local (7) teams will once again be led by the Manila Nomads, who are out to defend their trophy against all comers.  They will be joined by the Nomads Carabaos, Alabang Eagles, Alabang Ibons, Cebu Dragons, MAAP Warriors and the home team the PAF Jets, comprised of members from the Philippine Air Force's 600th Air Base Wing.

They will do battle with international teams Selangor Dogs, Macau, Aberdeen and of course with the tournament organizers the Pot Belly Pigs and Pot Belly Lites.

Like the Super Heroes of comic fame, those who take the field will do it for nothing more that the glory and honour of a hard fought game, as all proceeds from the tournament go to supporting the Bahay Bata Centre for street children in Angeles City and the Development Fund of the Philippine Rugby Football Union.

So if your in the area, why not come down and enjoy marvelling the majesty and athletecism of some true sporting heroes  ;)

Philippines valiant in narrow defeat to India PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 03 July 2007

The Philippines fought valliantly in their second international of the week against the visiting Indian team but ultimately they were out thought in the second half of the game played at the Nomad Sports Club in Manila.

The home side came out all guns blazing and dominated all facets of play in the opening fifteen minutes, a period which saw Ron Pena land a successful penalty kick. Seemingly unfazed by playing the vastly more internationally experienced Indian team the Philippines fronted up to their opposite numbers in the forwards and secured quality ball for scrum half Jake Letts. The three quarter line were also looking confident and the majority of play was in the Indian half of the field. Early in the game a break down the right wing by Michael Duhig the Philippine hooker who possesses a deceptive turn of pace had the home fans applauding and his clever chip ahead was scrambled into touch metres from the line by the fullback.
